Ninety-Plus Years of Looking Back and Counting: Part 3by Francesca Skelton December 1999 A year ago, Marian Ronsaville and I sat in the living room of her Kensington home of nearly nine decades as she shared her memories of her life in this community. Ill never forget McKeevers Ice Cream Store, she told me. The store is still there, but its not McKeevers any more. Id cut across the grass and run over there. She then went on to reminisce about teaching Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church at one time, and told me that she had been to a Central High School reunion a few years ago, which was attended by 20 or 30 people. Now at home much of the time, Marian recalled her love of nature and sports: I was the outdoors one in my family. Virginia would stay inside and help Mom, but I was into all kinds of activities. I won my letter C at Central High School for tennis. I was crazy about swimming, too, and once swam five miles. I also loved horses; I could ride almost anything. I knew all the bridle paths. We had a horse for a while, but Pop wouldnt let me keep it. He said: you cant keep horses in Kensington; you need to live in the country to own a horse. Marian paused and smiled, before letting me in on yet another confidence: I still love to sing and dance. With that statement, she broke into song: O give me a home, where the buffalo roam... I spontaneously joined her: And the deer and the antelope play... Finishing that lovely old refrain together seemed a fitting way to end my interview with this delightful woman. |
