July/August 1992 How one community organization, Interages, bring us together Building Bridges Between Young and OldThrough the special relationships, these children have begun to feel a part of the school, the community, and our culture. Thats how one Montgomery County School principal described some of the benefits of Intergenerational Bridges. Bridges pairs a trained older adult with a recently arrived immigrant child in a mentoring relationship that builds a new friendship while helping the child learn the customs and language of his or her new country. Interages, a nonprofit organization located on Connecticut Avenue in Kensington, designed Bridges and several other creative programs to bring older adults and children together to talk, play, and learn together in schools, child care centers and many other setting in our community. These efforts have brought well-deserved local and national recognition to Interages, which serves all of Montgomery County. Begun in 1987, Interages is dedicated to finding innovative ways to involve older adults with children and youth for their mutual benefit. It does this by providing training, technical assistance, information, resources, and other services to individuals and institutions seeking to link people across generations. Many benefits result, both to the people involved and to the community. For example, the older adults develop new friendships while sharing experience, sometimes as volunteers and sometimes in paid positions that supplement their retirement income. The children and youth increase their understanding of like and aging, give and receive services and friendship across ages, and receive support for specific problems. The community also gains when younger and older citizens use their talents in cooperative and constructive ways to provide important services. In the articles that follow, well tell you some more about Interages and ways that you can become involved. To find more, call Interages staff at 949-3551. |
